Waterflo, acombination of bioreactor and clarifier, is an innovative new approach to decentralized sewage treatment in rural areas. Its first application was in Bagband, Germany.It fully utilizes the concept of total liquid reflux of EBV’s biological process, and achieves higher concentrations of activated sludge in the bioreactor by means of airlift recirculation technology. Moreover, the proprietary aeration equipment enhances the oxygen transfer efficiency and greatly improves the degradation of organic compounds in the wastewater. The low cost system is easy to operate and manage, uses less energy and requires very little space for installation. It is ideal for small towns, communities and rural sewage treatment.
The system is based on the conventional A/O process and utilizes the proprietary Engelbart aeration equipment and airlift reflux technology in a specially designed basin to control the sludge concentration at a high level. The sludge concentration can be as high as 8000mg/L, and has a high density, good settling and separation properties.
After grit elimination and oil pre-treatment, the wastewater is pumped into the Waterflo system to begin biological treatment. The different growth conditions of the sludge in the anoxic tank and aerobic tank are realized by carefully controlling the aeration.
There is a constant circulation of sludge between the two pools, which allows for continuous nitrification and denitrification of the ammonia nitrogen in the sewage. Phosphorus, BOD and other pollutants are absorbed and decomposed in the activated sludge under the effect of flocculation in aerobic pond. The separation of mud, water and gas is facilitated by a uniquely designed three phase separator. Water and sludge flow up through a proprietary clarifier package that reduces the effect of inertia and promotes the liquid phase separation. After the supernatant reaches a certain level, the overflow is collected in a separate pool or discharged safely to the environment.
