It is a a 2-stage process that uses two different kinds of activated sludge. In the first stage (A) it is a special sludge for combination of biological phosphate elimination with pre-clarification of the raw wastewater. In the second stage (B), consequently, a very limited load of a special nitrifying-denitrifying sludge results in an improved digestion of so-called hardly biodegradable residual components. It then results in drastic reduction of COD in the treated wastewater compared to “common” processes. Additionally – as desired – less surplus sludge emerges in the complete engelbart AB process. Compared with conventional methods that use a sludge recycling, the treatment capacity per basin-volume could be doubled.

Engelbart AB is very suitable for municipal wastewater treatment applications especially during winter months when the concentration of nitrogen compounds in the effluent is higher.
